Pay Homage to the Goat
Let me start off with paying homage to the “GOAT”, Serena Jameka Williams. Yes, the GOAT of not just Women’s tennis but the tennis universe. The Saginaw, Michigan born superstar has the 2nd most Grand Slam titles in history, and the most in the Open Era. This is a reference to the modern era of tennis when they opened competition up amateurs and international players. Williams has also won:
- 14 Grand Slam Doubles titles
- 5 World Tour Championships (WTA)
- 4 Olympic Gold Medals (1 in singles and 4 in doubles)
- Holds the record for most consecutive weeks ranked as the #1 tennis player in the world (186)
Osaka
She’s simply the most amazing phenomenon we’ve seen on a tennis court. While, I still believe Serena has more in the tank and I am rooting for her to get the Grand Slam record. There’s been something (or someone) nipping at her heels for some years now. That someone is Naomi Osaka. She first stepped into stardom in the 2018 U.S. Open Final when she beat Williams and, took home her first Grand Slam title. Fast forward to 2021, she has 2 more Grands Slams, some time spent ranked at #1 in the world, and another Australian Open Final match after beating Williams for the 3rd time. So, the question stands to ask. Has Naomi truly arrived? Is she ready to take the crown as the biggest tennis star in the world? Would we even go as far to say it’s already hers? Before we scoff at the idea, she’s already a mega-star. She is the 8th among athletes in endorsements. Combine that with just under 2 million IG followers and it’s safe to say she’s doing numbers. The 2020 Sports illustrated Sportsperson of the year has some pretty big shoes to fill, and there’s no guarantee she’s the next chosen one. But, it’s going to good show as we find out.
